Shortly after I believe there was a sudden rash of house fires along the road. As a result of a lawsuit, a settlement was reached in which the residents could stay but if a house ever fell into disrepair or caught fire, it could not be rebuilt. If I recall right, sometime in the 1970's or 80's the city of Augusta, which owns that land up to the head gates, started evicting the residents. I remember many houses along the river as well as on the road down by the waterfall (there was a huge garden there at one house). One can still see the remnants of concrete steps, foundations, etc. ![]() That is the last of many squatters houses along the canal road.
